The Enhanced composite averages English, Math and Reading.
How is the ACT composite score calculated?
Add up the English, Math and Reading scores you received. Divide that sum by 3, then round the result to the nearest whole number. Fractions of one-half or more round up, while smaller ones round down.
Under the legacy ACT, Science also went into the total, and that sum was divided by 4. The source of that rule is ACT's own score guide.
Divide by 3 and the decimal part can only be .00, .33 or .67. That means an Enhanced composite never lands exactly on a half. Only the legacy average of four scores could land there, and 27.5 rounded up to 28. An Enhanced composite never changes because of Science. Add Science only when you want a STEM score, since that score averages Math and Science.

ACT's ranks for 2026–27 are the source of these percentiles.
| Test | Section scores | Average | Composite | Percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enhanced | 24, 30, 25 | 79 ÷ 3 = 26.33 | 26 | 86th |
| Enhanced | 29, 27, 30 | 86 ÷ 3 = 28.67 | 29 | 93rd |
| Enhanced | 36, 36, 36 | 108 ÷ 3 = 36 | 36 | 100th |
| Legacy | 27, 28, 27, 30 | 112 ÷ 4 = 28 | 28 | 91st |
| Legacy | 27, 28, 27, 28 | 110 ÷ 4 = 27.5 | 28 | 91st |
| Legacy | 17, 36, 2, 1 | 56 ÷ 4 = 14 | 14 | 28th |
One point can tip the outcome. If three section scores add up to 79, you get a 26. A total of 80 works out to 26.67, which rounds up to a 27.
